What Is Calcification Tendonitis?

Calcium buildup in your tendons causes Calcification Tendinitis. These calcium deposits can accumulate in a single location or in multiple locations. Some people who have calcific tendonitis do not experience discomfort. However, if the calcium deposits in your tendons become inflamed, you may experience severe pain and stiffness.

Calcification Tendinitis is most commonly associated with the shoulder — or rotator cuff — but it can occur anywhere in the body.

Calcification Tendinitis is more common in people between 40 and 60. Women are also slightly more likely than men to be affected. Calcific tendonitis can affect anyone and is not caused by any specific activity. The condition affects less than 10% of people seeking treatment for shoulder pain.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, calcific tendonitis has three stages of progression. They are as follows:

Pre-calcific

Movement causes pain during this early stage, and the range of motion is limited. At the cellular level, the area changes.

Calcium is released from cells, resulting in calcium deposits

After a while, the body starts to reabsorb the deposits. This stage can be extremely painful.

Post-calcific

Your physical therapist can help you reach the post-calcific stage by reducing your pain and inflammation—contact Shanti Physical Therapy today to begin your journey to better health.

I’d like to give a huge shout-out to Jaldip over at Shanti Rehab Services LLC. If anyone is looking for a great PT place, he’s your guy. I couldn’t move my right arm due to calcific tendinitis. I understand the process takes time but after just two visits, I felt so much better!

How Will Physical Therapy Help Treat Calcification Tendonitis?

A physical therapist can help you manage your pain and inflammation caused by calcification tendonitis. One therapeutic tool that has shown to be successful in treating this condition is ultrasound therapy.

This is a conservative form of treatment in which an ultrasound machine uses mild heat to drive sound waves through the tissues. Ultrasound therapy has been shown to reduce the size of the calcification deposit and restore mobility to the affected area.

Traditional ice and heat therapies have also been used to help lessen the severity of this condition.

When you visit Shanti Physical Therapy, your physical therapist will design a personalized treatment plan perfectly molded to your needs. If you’re experiencing calcification tendonitis, your treatment plan will include strengthening and stretching exercises targeted at the rotator cuff.

Strengthening the rotator cuff will help control the stability of the shoulder joint and can reduce the pressure on the calcium deposits in the tendon. You will begin your treatment with easier strengthening exercises and advance as your body becomes stronger.
