Head and Neck Physical Therapy

Your neck moves with almost everything you do, from reading to checking over your shoulder. Pain felt here can come from the neck's muscles, joints, ligaments or nerves, and sometimes from the shoulder, jaw or head. This page points you to the reading that fits what you are noticing.

When to get medical care first

See the full safety checklist
  • If a headache comes on suddenly and feels explosive, is the worst you have ever had, or comes with confusion, slurred speech, a change in vision, weakness or loss of balance, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
  • If you have a fever and headache and your neck is so stiff you cannot touch your chin to your chest, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
  • After a fall, blow or other injury to your head or neck, contact a medical professional promptly. If you cannot move an arm or hand, have someone call 911.
  • If you are unsure what is going on, ask a medical professional. Information on a website is not a diagnosis.

Evaluation comes before treatment

Physical Therapy at Shanti starts with an evaluation. Your physical therapist asks how and when your symptoms began and what they are making hard to do, then looks at how you move, including your posture and how your neck and shoulders turn. Any plan comes after that, shaped by what the evaluation finds. If something needs another clinician's attention, your physical therapist may refer you.

Approaches a plan may include

Depending on your evaluation, a plan may use some, all or none of these approaches:
